Chapter 10

Tiago glanced up at the brisk knock on his office door. He’d told Marie-Luz he didn’t want to be interrupted. Trying to get twelve hours of work done in eight so he could go home to Vivi and Miranda was hard enough without constant disturbances. Of course, it would be easier if he could get to work earlier, like he used to before his marriage, but getting out of bed while Vivi was still in it was harder than he’d imagined. Once this custody battle was solved and Eduardo was up to speed as his new partner, perhaps a honeymoon was in order.

The knock sounded again. “Come,” he called out.

Eduardo’s head appeared, then the rest of him. “Busy?”

“Always. Give me good news, Eduardo.” Because for the past week it had all been bad. The custody hearing was going ahead, and he still had no dirt on Spencer or his wife.

“Spencer’s lawyer has demanded to see the prenuptial agreement, claiming there’s something fishy about you getting married within days of the custody suit being filed.”

Tiago ran a frustrated hand through his hair. “Send it. There’s nothing in there that would give a hint as to why Genevieve and I married.”

“Already done.”

“So why are you bothering me?”

“Because the court has ordered that each couple be observed for a week while caring for Miranda. Of course Spencer’s lawyer has requested they be given more time, because Miranda is familiar with you and thus more likely to be relaxed in your house.”

“I don’t trust him. What if he kidnaps her or doesn’t return Miranda at the end of the allotted time?” Tiago got up from behind his desk and moved over to the window, too tense to sit. Usually he loved the Buenos Aires skyline, the mix of old and new. Today he’d rather be in Mendoza, staring at his vines as they kissed the feet of the Andes Mountains.

“There will be a court-appointed social services representative with them at all times. Same for you.”

“I’m not worried about my house. Miranda is happy. Genevieve is an excellent stand-in mother. And our relationship is going well.”

“What about the PTSD?”

“She hasn’t had another episode as far as I’m aware.”

“Good. Since Genevieve is acting as Miranda’s teacher, I can ask that she continue to be allowed access even while the child is with Spencer. That should put you at ease.”

He’d be happier if Vivi stayed away from Spencer as well. It was hard to isolate the unease he felt or explain it to someone else. But Denman had never trusted his brother, so Tiago didn’t either.

“And you still haven’t uncovered anything on either of them?”

“No. Although, strangely, we haven’t been able to find a single thing on his wife. Linda Suarez appears to have materialized out of thin air two years ago. There are no school records or any other governmental paperwork for her before that time. I’ve instructed the investigator to keep digging, but it won’t be cheap.”

“I don’t care about the cost.”

“You might if Spencer is granted custody of Miranda.
